color crush: sea glass

This week I am crushing on all varieties of sea foam and sea glass greens...I'm pretty sure my subconscious is telling me I need a beach vacation.  But, to integrate these colors into the everyday/ordinary, how gorgeous and unique are they in the kitchen?

Which is your favorite?  I can't decide between the very minty 2 or more grey 4.

wallpaper me

I NEVER thought I'd say this, but lately I am lusting over (gasp) wallpaper.  I've given it a bad wrap all these years (perhaps due to all the awful kitschy prints I've seen and lived with) and never even gave it a thought when it came to daydreaming about the decor of my future abode.  But lately... I can't get enough.  I'm dreaming about a powder room papered in a bold, fun print...or an accent wall...or a reading nook...the options are endless!

The obsession started with this:

Thibaut Cheetah

(cheetahs? yes please...and makes a gorgeous pattern when viewed from across a room)

And then there are these lovelies...
Farrow & Ball Orangerie
Farrow & Ball Renaissance
Ostriches!
(Side note:  after some extreme googling, I found that the Ostrich Wallpaper can be bought here and the above image is from Lonny founder Michelle Adams' amazinngg apartment)

And, in case you were wondering, I did "purchase" five free wallpaper samples (the maximum allowed) from Farrow & Ball's website.  I wonder if they track how many times you do that per day?

Happy Monday!

So.  I'm a little late to fashion week.  As in sort of missed it all together.  Playing catch-up now, and in browsing some of the collections picked up on this color theme for spring... so many gorgeous pinks and sherbert oranges!  I am loving this palette and couldn't pass up an opportunity to throw together a few of my favorite (and-right-on-trend) decor items / inspiration images.

spoonflower

My couch is in serious need of a slipcover.  It's that cheap Ikea one that only comes in a natural canvas color.  I have searched high and low and have not found a suitable cover anywhere.  So I've decided I need a sewing machine.

My mom taught my sister and I how to sew when we were very little, letting us use her machine to practice sewing straight lines of thread on binder paper... as we got better, we graduated from paper to doll clothes and then to clothes for each other.  (This only happened once:  I made her a dress and she made me a reversible vest that we thought was extremely cool at the time.)  I haven't done any sewing since leaving home, and have certainly never attempted any project as daunting as a couch slipcover, but at this point anything would be better than what the couch looks like now.  And just think how many throw pillows I could make!  (I have an obsession with throw pillows- they offer such an easy way to add pops of crazy color or throw some pattern into a room.)

We used to go to Poppy Fabric and spend hours and hours roaming the aisles, digging around in the bargain remnant bins, and leafing through pattern books.  It was such a magical wonderful creative place.  When I moved to New York I took a trip to Mood (fascinated by Project Runway of course)... but I remember being completely overwhelmed and feeling zero creativity.  It was a total madhouse and felt uninviting, very opposite of my childhood trips to Poppy, and as such I haven't returned since.

Recently though, I've discovered the wonder of purchasing fabric online.  (I LOVE shopping online.)  During a recent blog-surfing-session, I stumbled upon an amazing website called Spoonflower.  I was drawn to it at first by this fabric:

So simple but textural and interesting...and chevron, which I can't seem to get enough of as of late.  I found SO MANY more amazing fabrics- now I'm completely inspired and had to stop myself from buying $5 swatches of each of them.

The other thing about this website that is SO COOL is that you can design your own fabrics by uploading an image.  (Are you listening Mom?!?  This is right up your alley.)  Also, I'm sure this will become a new procrastination tool for me... I've already attempted a couple patterns and it's very addicting.

As an online-fabric-shopping-newbie I have zero point of reference as far as price points, so it could be completely overpriced...but I'm still loving it.  They have a "designer discount" that you are eligible for if you upload a design.. and you can earn commission if someone places a large enough order on your design.  Pretty neat!  I am going to stop now, as I am not being paid to advertise for them and I am up wayyyy past my bed time (was doing school work and learning about 34093489238409 kinds of building codes and regulations) and my eyeballs are going to fall off my face.  So, without further ado... here are a few of my favorite designs.

gallery wall

favorite - have been drooling over this image forever

In the time since I moved into my apartment last year, I have accomplished almost nothing in terms of decorating my room.  Sure, I was very handy and put up a chandelier on moving day (this isn't really that incredible seeing as it sat in a box for a year in my previous apartment).  I also managed to get two (two!) prints framed.  Only one is hung on the wall and that's thanks to Dad, about 2 months ago.  Curtains are hung, and the furniture's been rearranged countless times... and I think I've finally found an arrangement that works!!  (Also thanks to Dad.)

So now my goal is to fill up some of the very white, very blank walls.  Took a trip to Ikea this weekend and purchased some frames... and managed to put a print in one of them.  Now...  Must.  Hang. On. Wall.

I want to create a sort of gallery wall like the images above... what's more fun than a whole wall full of things you adore?  I think it's so interesting how the chosen images can have a sort-of conversation and play off of one another... standing alone they may be nothing special but together they become sensational.

I am completely in love with this idea of framing all sorts of images that I am inspired by or drawn to, in similar frames of one color family.  In theory, I do like the look of random frames put together, as in the last image above.  In reality though I'm a fan of a more polished and streamlined look.  I adore thin metal frames (like this one) that almost blend into the wall but stand out just enough.

The problem is... I don't have all the prints yet.  I've been collecting things, but verrryyyy slowly as I seem to have a knack for falling in love with the most expensive of items.  I have started somewhat of a collection wish-list with Pinterest.  I would be oh so happy if the below images were framed on my wall...  if only getting them there was as easy as clicking "pin it".

Coming to a wall near me soon (?)

honey, i'm home

Just spent forever+ minutes browsing images I've saved on my computer...ahh life before Pinterest!  What did we do without it?  Not properly categorize our inspiration images- that's what we did.

Oyy.  Totally frustrating because I have so many gorgeous images, but no clue where they came from.  And of course they're all saved in separate random folders that I thought were so aptly named at the time.  Rather than letting them just take up space, I decided to put together a sort-of-collage-slash-just-pretty-things-piece using a few favorites... apologies for the lack of proper crediting.

Welcome to dreamland lovies...

In case you were unaware...I'm a total little girl at heart.  If it was socially acceptable to run around town in glitzy ballgowns and layers of tulle I'd be all over that...  I usually gravitate towards whimsical images of sheer swathed fabrics, glitter strewn rooms and chandeliers everywhere...full of pastel tones like lilac and baby pink.  maybe this gravitation is just the remaining imprint of my ballet years and "visions of sugarplums" dancing in my head, but my favorite word has always been gossamer...which I guess is pretty evident in the dreamy images above.

It's funny though, these inspiration images (that I have boatloads of) aren't exactly what I'd choose if I had oodles of money to spend on my apartment/wardrobe... lately I've found myself drawn to classic pieces, clean lines, and (small) bold pops of color.  I've always loved white on white interiors... and as for my wardrobe...anyone who knows me can vouch for the fact that it consists mainly of black, white, grey and navy items.  the craziest i get is a pop of neon nail polish and some glitzy-ish jewelry...

In dreamland I'm completely comfortable with this sugary overdose... layers upon layers of glitz and sparkle and tulle and sequins.... in real life it just feels like overkill.  There's always a little bit showing through though, as much as i might try to shy away from it.  I think I'll always be that little girl at heart, no matter how old I get or how much my style evolves.  Maybe one day when I have an actual office/work space that's where I'll pour on the glitz and whimsy.

For now, I'll stick to wearing more bracelets at once than generally acceptable.

you musn't be afraid to dream a little bigger darling

Inspired by Caitlin's post, I have come to the conclusion that it is time to dream a little bigger.

This summer, I took an intro interior design class at FIT...and things started to just make sense.  I realized that my obsession with blogs about interiors, my love for color and pattern, and my tendency to constantly rearrange the furniture could all come together into a career.  So, rather spur-of-the-moment-like (because when you discover what you want to do, you want to do it right away!) I applied to some design schools.

After much deliberation (and consideration of future financial woes due to exorbitant student loans) I decided on an online MFA program that I can complete on my own schedule.

Classes have just started and I am oh so excited!  It's amazing how happy one feels, knowing that you're headed in the right direction.

And so- this blog begins.  This is a personal challenge...I follow upwards of 20 blogs, all unique and full of high quality material...so beginning my own blog is a daunting task.... that I have been wanting to do but have been putting off for over a year.

No longer!  I've decided to just jump in, and use this as a sort of melting pot of all of my inspirations, daily challenges, and random thoughts...as well as a networking place to supplement my "classroom" learning experiences.

Looking forward to the challenge!  Hope  to learn many things along the way.
